The state’s Respiratory Care Board provides the requirements for respiratory therapist CEUs in California. The board has new requirements for respiratory care practitioners that began on January 1, 2024. Respiratory Care Practitioners with a license expiring December 31, 2023, are the first group that must complete these new requirements. How many CEUs does California require?
The state board requires 30 total respiratory therapist CEUs in California during each two-year renewal cycle.
CEU Requirements for Respiratory Therapists in California
The Respiratory Care Board of California requires you to complete the following to maintain an active respiratory care license.
- 15 CEUs for respiratory therapists in California must directly relate to respiratory care clinical practice.
- 10 CEUs must directly relate to respiratory care practitioner leadership.
- You can earn the remaining five CEUs through the above options or choose courses indirectly related to respiratory care, including attending meetings provided by the CSRC, the Respiratory Care Board, or the AARC.
In addition to these CEU requirements for respiratory therapists in California, you must obtain 15 of the 30 CEUs through live, interactive courses, including in-person or online.
How often do I have to renew my CEUs as a California Respiratory Therapist?
You must meet your CEU renewal requirements in California by your license expiration date every two years. Keep in mind that the board has recently changed its requirements for the next renewal cycle.
